Ways to use your hoofknife
Step 1: To practice to become a trimmer a good idea is to start practicing on a piece of wood, in that way you can´t do ha horse any harm. Practice on your log! Wax on Wax off .........
Step 2: Practice on cadaver hooves. It gives you an excellent opportunity to draw your hoofgraph on the hoof before you trim, so that you know for sure how you intend to adjust and trim the hoof.
Step 3: Ask someone with great experience to evaluate your as a trimmer before you start triming living horses.
On the images below we use a knife called "dick-knives" and there are both left-and right-edged.
IMAGE 1 - pull!
Here is a knife right edged as you pull towards you.
IMAGE 2 - Vertical
Set the right edged knife straight up and use your other
thumb to control the knife.
Then you can easily adjust the frog.
IMAGE 3 - pressure
The right-knife is used to push away from you.
To trim a overgrown bar or a long wall.
IMAGE 4 - Thumb grip
On the image the right-edged knife is use to push away from
you with a help of your other thumb.
The grip works excellent
when you need a good precision, cutting bars or an abscess for example.
